Albacete prepare for weekend

albacete.jpgWith 117 competitors from 22 nations set to challenge three European crowns this weekend in Albacete, the 2009 European Championship event is due to produce an exciting competition as they pay a visit to the Spanish track for the second time this season.

The European titles are sessioned over three categories, 125GP, Supersport and Superstock 1000, with a firm event in each class ensuing with a proclaimed champion.

In the 125GP session the nation's best will arrive to challenge each other, with national heros such as Marcel Schrötter (Germany), Ricardo Moretti (Italy), Cyril Carrillo (France) and Erno Kostamo (Scandinavia) likely to appear at the front.

Amid the Supersport racers, extra CEV Buckler protagonists Kev Coghlan, Xavi Forés and Adrián Bonastre will be challenging for victory with French champion Mathieu Gines and some competitors with World Championship experience such as Italian duo Mirko Giansanti and Roberto Tamburini and Romanian racer Robert Muresan.

Spaniard Carmelo Morales seeks to defend the Superstock 1000 title he claimed last year at Albacete, with his Spanish opponents Javier del Amor and Bernat Martínez trying the claim the crown themselves. Italians Alessandro Polita and Stefano Cruciani could also be a danger.

The timetable for Sunday:
10:30am - Superstock 1000
Midday - 125GP
1.15pm - Supersport

In between the initial two events, the Albacete track will honour two 125cc World Champions, by naming corners after current World title champion Julián Simón and 2006 title winner Álvaro Bautista, they will both be in attendance.

Brivio on Rossi

briviorossi.jpgThe joy of repeatedly winning title crowns has not faded for Valentino Rossi, neither has Davide Brivio’s excitment for working with the seven times premier class World Champion.

Rossi’s fourth MotoGP crown with Yamaha was enjoyed from the factory squad, among them Brivio, who comments that the presence of colleague Jorge Lorenzo had aided the Italian to increase his performance level this season.

“Working with Valentino is always something special, and despite it having been six years he is always able to surprise with something new,” says Brivio. “Every year is special, but I think this year is because at the beginning of the season we realised we had big competition internally, and it wasn’t so easy because by the middle of the season the strongest rival was in the same garage. At the end of the day it was very interesting, and I think we managed it very well.”

He adds, “Big congratulations go to Valentino because we saw him working very hard this year, harder than ever I think. When the level goes up, and the competition becomes stronger, he puts in more effort. I think that’s why he’s still here celebrating championships.”

The 30 year-old’s twelfth stage appearance of the year at Sepang on Sunday confirmed this season's title following a steady race in wet conditions, Rossi’s lack of errors this season has been the key according to Brivio.

“The group (Rossi’s team) has been together for six years, and is always very careful about details and not making mistakes, because they do happen,” he explains. “The target is to make as few mistakes as possible, but we really care about the details. Even the mechanics – who have been working together for 15 years – are always thinking how to make it better, and this is a motivation that comes from Valentino.”

Rossi claims title while Stoner wins at Sepang
rosswin.jpgCasey Stoner was the winner at the Shell Advance Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix on Sunday, however Valentino Rossi who placed third lay the basis of the story this weekend.

Stoner’s second consecutive victory was impressive, along his lengthy 14.666s margin, but it was the Doctor’s placing that claimed his ninth world title (seventh in the premier class) as he defended last seasons’s crown, Dani Pedrosa arrived in second place with his 78th stage appearance over all classes.

The event began on a wet circuit after a delay due to rain, there was drama from the beginning. An issue during the sighting lap with his engine for Jorge Lorenzo meant that he was unable to join the starting grid in time, resulting in relegation from second to the back.

It made no difference to the Spaniard as he raced up to pass Rossi, who fell to tenth after a sluggish beginning from pole position. Lorenzo eventually placed in fourth position.

Randy de Puniet had an early nasty high-side which luckily resulted in no injury for the Frenchman, as Stoner gained a four second lead at the front over Pedrosa after only two laps.

Nicky Hayden was dogged in his efforts to hold off Lorenzo in fifth spot, but the Fiat Yamaha racer was able to pass the Ducati Marlboro competitor before Rossi overtook both to move into fourth position after eight laps.

Shortly after, Stoner’s lead at the front had increased to a massive 15 seconds, however there was no such deficit between Pedrosa in third and his Repsol Honda colleague Andrea Dovizioso, who challenged for second place. Disaster arrived for the Italian as on lap 14 he gave way to the wet conditions and slid off the track, allowing Rossi to move up to third and take on Pedrosa.

The Spaniard was out of Rossi’s grasp for the rest of the event, third was one place better than he needed to claim the crown, and a flamboyant celebration ensued involving a chicken clad in the Italian’s blue and yellow colours.

Aleix Espargaró impressed with an eleventh position in his third MotoGP event for Pramac, whilst Monster Yamaha Tech 3 duo Colin Edwards and James Toseland both found the conditions difficult, finishing 13th and 15th respectively.
